Salzkammergut Trekking

Self guided 10 Days / 9 Nights or 8 Days / 7 Nights

Steep rocks next to lush green mountains you find in the Salzkammergut, as well as lovely hidden mountain lakes. The paths are quiet – but lively nature on the sides. This wondrous landscape again and again causes you to quietly standing still and enjoying the beauty – in this way the pearl of nature best is experienced. One special part of the Salzkammergut certainly is the Ausseer Land on the other side of the pass Plöcken. Here, where legendary Archduke Johann met and fell in love with his Christl the postmasters’ daughter, you will stay an extra night. At the end of the tour you might join old Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph in his saying: “It was very nice, I was amused…”

Tour Details: Demanding walking tour with 4 to 6,5 hours daily walks. Some trails are quite flat and leading along rivers and lakes to the hotel. Others are climbing/walking up to alpine pastures or from alpine pasture to alpine pasture. Good fitness level is expected for this tour!

Day 1 – Individual arrival at Abersee/Lake Wolfgangsee

Day 2 – Lake Schwarzensee, Strobl and Bad Ischl

15,5 km, 5 hours walking time, +-240 m

By boat across the lake to St. Wolfgang. There you hike on Sattelweg path (saddle walk) to picturesque Lake Schwarzensee. Downhill into the valley through a gorge and round the Bürglstein to the Lake Promenade of Strobl. Bus transfer to the Austrian Emperor’s summer residence and salt-city Bad Ischl.

Day 3 – Bad Ischl – Salt Mountain – Mount Predigstuhl – Bad Goisern

14,5 km, 5 hours walking time, +785 m, -650 m

We start the walking tour at the promenade of Bad Ischl and walk upwards to the salt mountain of Bad Ischl. Passing little alpine pastures we will start the ascent to mount Predigstuhl with a phenomenal view over the World Heritage of Hallstatt. Passing the Ewige Wand (literally meaning the eternal wall) we will walk downwards to Bad Goisern.

Day 4 – Bad Goisern – Transfer Alpine Pasture – Altaussee – Bus Bad Aussee

18,88 km, 5,5 hours walking time, +486 m, -589 m

From alpine pasture to alpine pasture you walk on the high plateau to the lovely Ausseer Land. Downhill walk to the alpine pasture of Blaa Alm and along the flower trail to Altausse. With the bus to Bad Aussee.

Day 5 – Rest day in Ausseer Land

Day 6 – Bad Aussee – Koppenbrüller valley – Hallstatt

15 km, 4,5 hours walking time, +150 m, -220 m

Along a river path through the deeply cut Koppenvalley to the Koppenbrüller caves (public access and guided tours!). On your walk to the Lake Hallstättersee, where you take the boat to the centre of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. Take some minutes to stroll through the wonderful small alleys of Hallstatt or visit the World Heritage museum.

Day 7 – Hallstatt – cable car salt mount – Plankensteinalm – Gosau valley

12,5 km, 6 hours walking time, +686 m, -554 m

By cable car up to Hallstatt mountain valley with Celtic gravesite and salt mine. Past the Mountain Plassen to Gosau valley. Stunning view of the highest mountain range of Upper Austria –Dachstein with his glaciers – and later on to the steep ridges of the Gosaukamm.

Day 8 – Lakes Gosauseen

12, 65 km, 4 hours walking time, +-300 m

Lovely walk to the three little Lakes Gosauseen. At the end of the valley an alpine hut invites you for a “Jause” – a typical Austrian lunch-break.

Day 9 – Gosau – Bus to Bad Ischl – Lake Nussensee – Lake Wolfgangsee

19,23 km, 6 hours walking time, +277 m, -209 m

By bus to Bad Ischl. On Empress Elisabeth-walk to idyllic little Lake Nussensee and then along the river Ischl to Strobl. On the banks of Lake Wolfgangsee across natural reserve Blinkling-moor to Abersee (lovely view to St. Wolfgang, high mountain Schafberg and Lake Wolfgangsee).

Day 10 – Individual Departure

 

The 8 day tour is without Day 5 and 8!
