
The Way of Saint James in Salzburg
Self-guided walking tour – 8 days / 7 nights
You’ll walk on Salzburg’s Saint James Trail, from boundary mark to boundary mark through the foothills of the Alps, through the Rupert’s Winkl and past high mountains into the Alps. The former clerical state of Salzburg always gave pilgrims a warm welcome. The route passes Interesting ecclesiastical sites, charming countryside villages, and picturesque trails. The routes are fairly easy but long. Hikers should have average to above average levels of fitness.
Tour Details: You will walk on easy trails but some days will be quite long and therefore we expect good fitness from the walkers.
Day 1: Individual arrival at Seekirchen on Lake Wallersee
Day 2: By train to Oberhofen – Eugendorf
Start the day with a scenic train ride to the start of Salzburg’s Saint James Trail. The walking path then passes bucolic scenery down the hills to Lake Wallersee. Follow the trail to your charming hotel in Eugendorf. Walking time about 6 hours.
Day 3: Eugendorf – Salzburg
You’ll enjoy today’s walk as you see the distant mountains, leading to your destination. A comfortable walk brings you downhill to Salzburg, where a wealth of churches and historical sights wait to be discovered. If you like, take a side trail to Maria Plain, a baroque pilgrim church towering high over Salzburg. Rest your head in a comfy hotel bed in Salzburg tonight. Walking time about 3,5 hours.
Day 4: Salzburg – Großgmain/Bad Reichenhall
This morning, head in the direction of Mount Untersberg. When you arrive at the quaint town of Großgmain you’ll cross the German border to Rupert’s Winkl. From there, enjoy checking out the salt metropolis in Bad Reichenhall, where you’ll spend the night. Walking time about 5 hours.
Day 5: Bad Reichenhall – Unken
Today you’ll follow the Saalach River back into the country of Salzburg. Passing Lake Salzachsee, the trail goes deeper and deeper into the mountains. You’ll follow the path along the river bank, with water sometimes wildly gushing through steep rock walls. Keep going until you reach your hotel in Unken. Walking time about 5 hours
Day 6: Unken – Waidring/St. Ulrich
The first part of toady’s route follows the Saalach River into the widening valley around the picture postcard village of Lofer. This mountain village retains its authentic charm. As you look up, the steep rocks of the Loferer Steinberge mountain range seem to scrape the sky. Continue the trail to Strubpass into Tyrol until you reach your hotel in Waidring/St. Ulrich. Walking time about 5 hours
Day 7: Waidring/St. Ulrich – St. Johann
Begin the day by hiking the scenic path to St. Johann. If you like, keep going past Lake Pillersee and St. Jacob’s church to St. Johann. Walking time from 4 to 6.5 hours depending on which route you take.
Day 8: Individual departure fro St. Johann in Tyrol
Dates: Daily arrival from April to October. Minimum persons: 2
